    Handmade

    I like suggesting IKEA cabinets for the kitchen, bathroom and built-ins. There is a company in LA called Semi Handmade that offers customized door faces for stock cabinets.   


    I will be discussing this with clients as a way to offer high-end custom looks for built-in spaces while keeping costs down.  I wonder if there are any companies in the DC/MD/VA area that offer something similar.


    Will keep you updated on what I find out.  In the meantime feast on some of the images from the website.

    Tech Startup co-Working Space NW DC

    A friend of mine, Chris MacDonald, co-founder of GeekEasy asked me to stop by this week to look at a new space they are getting ready and give advice on colors/layout etc. Of course I did! The space is painted in my high school colors, purple and gold (Go Saints!), and has the bones of a really cool workspace.  More details to come from our collaborations. but here is a taste of the current space.

     

    Talking with Chris over the past couple of weeks about the startups and co-working space has gotten me thinking more about the idea of these kinds of spaces for design-centric types. What kinds of shared spaces would work and what amenities would start-up design firms need? How is content and collaboration in a client/project driven environment different from a tech/internet environment?

     

    I'm interested in seeing if there is the possibility for a specific type ofco-working space tailored to start-up architects and ID's that could pool resources, share production space, bandwidth, render-farming, model building, 3d printing, display and curation, community involvement, and ultimately do pro-bono work as part of the membership of the space. With the amount of empty retail space out there, there certainly must be ample opportunities to create spaces like this. 

     

    This interesting book was written recently about the design of startup co-working spaces.

    Design (In Squiggles)

    Design is an art of exploration. We come up with an idea, follow a thread, reject it, generate another idea, reject it and on until we eventually come out somewhere new.  There is a subconscious grounding that often lets us 'start of on the right foot' without us knowing it.  Through our collective experiences, training, observations, and abilities we are really able to rapidly synthesize information and formulate complex and comprehensive approaches to solving the design challenge on our table.  The ability to layer and edit information as we explore solutions is a designers strength, but how does that process really work?


    I came across this diagram about the process of design which struck a chord;

    Its almost as if a beginning thought is like the big bang. An explosion alive with possibilities that are ultimately shaped by interactions, requirements, observances, and rejections. Atoms of uncertain ideas spinning a bit out of control, circling around, combining and colliding until there are certain realizations and meanings placed upon them. What sticks and what doesn't. Through that chaos comes clarity, as if the idea is brought under control and wrestled into an even state of being.  And out of that comes the true art of exploration - the navigation of uncertainty and the ability to focus chaos. 


    So I've decided to design in squiggles, not in circles.

    Steve Jobs as Design

    The world is saddened with the passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. A great loss whose name will be remembered with the likes of Edison and Einstein for ultimately changing the world in fundamental ways. As a designer this loss is particularly heartfelt as we have lost a true visionary that brought design to the forefront of our subconscious collective.


     I remember the day my father brought home an Apple IIc computer (which I believe we still have) and we were thrust into a new way of thinking, working and playing. I remember thinking that the shape and function of this piece of hardware, with it's monochrome monitor, was something right out of the science fiction - mixed with a bit of good old fashioned automotive grill design. It was a powerhouse of thought, cut right out of the future, thrust into the now.




     And then the days of the first Macintosh, that boxy, lovable cube that made computing something more accessible and personal. Compact, affordable and stylish, it wove into the world the GUI - graphical user interface, again changing the way we thought, worked, and played.




    Jobs founded NeXT Computer after leaving Apple, but failed to capture the same sense of product design by introducing a costly, but technologically advanced, box that could never distinguish itself in a growing low-cost PC and Windows dominated market.


    However, it really was the software under the hood that proved to be something worthy of attention, especially when Apple purchased NeXT in 1997 and used the software to create what would ultimately become OSX, iTunes, and MobileMe. 

    Jobs seemed to becoming as concerned with developing the power of software and investigating how we interacted with that software. How does a computer and the information become 'Interpersonal' and collaborative especially with the the expanding Internet and information available to us. With that monumental integration of thought, he continued to develop a design thread that began with the Macintosh in a different direction.

    But it was what Jobs did next that was hugely intriguing; buying Lucasfilms computer graphics division in 1986 and founding Pixar. He, along with others, recognized that the power of the computer was continuing to be transformed into something much more than a personal computational machine, its power could could be harnessed to entertain, visualize, and take us places we had never been to before. Design in a new form.


    Jobs' return to Apple and his pairing with Jonathan Ive in 1997 ushered in the synthesis of design ideas that had threaded through the years. Design took the front seat to introduce a product that became as iconic as the Macintosh; the iMac. 


    And the world took notice. Here was a machine that looked and functioned so fundamentally different from anything out there that it becomes an object of desire. 

    And then the iPod,

     


     




    And then iTunes,




    And then the iPhone,





    And then the iPad.



     

     

    What made this sequence of products so successful?  Jobs recognized that what we desired (without us even knowing it) was that we needed novel ways to interface and share the growing amount of information available. How quickly and easily could we access the things that are most important to us?  How can design bring joy, desire, learning, excitement, connection, fascination, intuition, utility, and myriad other things to our lives? How can the design of software and hardware come together to give us greater access to information, entertainment, and each other?



    Design is not just how something looks or functions. 


    Look deeper. 


    It is so much more.


    Thank you Mr. Jobs for everything you have given us. 


    The world is just a bit dimmer with you gone.

    Behind the Skin - East Wing, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

    Its not often you get to see what is underneath the skin of a famous landmark building. Currently the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, designed by the architect I.M Pei, is undergoing a reconstruction and the limestone cladding has been removed, and beneath it is revealed the concrete frame structure and brick infill.  





    A fascinating look behind the curtain don't you think?
